Edwardian Style
Wedding Attire
This was commissioned by a good friend for his wedding. The event had a sort of turn-of-the-century "freak show/circus" theme to it and he wanted to look like a ringmaster; the bride's gown, custom made by one of her friends, was inspired by mermaids. He made some quick sketches of what he was thinking - he is a visual artist - and I drew the rendering to the right which he approved of. He and I went to some fabric stores together and he picked out the materials with my guidance. I made all the pieces from scratch- shirt, collar, cravat, vest, pants and tailcoat. I drafted all of the patterns from his personal measurements. All pad-stitching, bar tacks and buttonholes were done by hand as well as any edge and top stitching, e.g. on the pants and vest. Other points of interest: "hidden" pockets in inside breast and tails of coat linings, the watch chain buttonhole in the vest, watch pocket in the pants waist band, "grown-on" waist bands with side cinches and "fish-tail" back.
