Evening Frock
I made this for my wife when she was pregnant. She needed to attend a formal event for her work which was "Great Gatsby" themed and asked me to make something for her to wear. I worked off of a pattern from the early 1920s which is apropos considering F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote the novel between 1923 and 1925 and the action takes place in 1922. It seems to me that many people picture the silhouettes of the late 1920s, with it's sleek and slender ideals, when they think of the great "Jazz Age Novel." I figured the more round shapes of the early 1920s, on which many contemporary critics ignorantly pass the cruel and short-sighted judgment of "frumpy," would actually be to the benefit of the pregnant physique. Although the hemline should be much lower for the period, she requested that I shorten it to her tastes. The fabric is a stretch lame velvet with a 3-dimensional ribbon lace for the cape and asymmetrical over-skirt. The beading/embroidery were cut from a garment from the 1980s and appliqued on. The belt with all the art deco design details was devised and constructed by me.
