Victorian Men's Clothing
I personally made all of the menswear that was constructed for this show, i.e. 2 mens frock coats, 2 mens shirts, 3 vests, 4 pairs of trousers, and 4 detachable collars, all within the space of about 3.5 weeks. I also built much of the womens costumes which you can see more of here.
I used a variety of commercial patterns to work from in building the mens costumes; most significantly Lauphing Moon Mercantile # 109 "Men's Single and Double-Breasted Frock Coats with 2 Vests" for the frock coats and one of the vests and Simplicity # 5037 for the other vests as well as Simplicity # 5023 for the trousers. I also used Laughing Moon Mercantile # 107 "Men's Victorian and Edwardian Shirts" for the shirts and collars. Although I altered style lines and other details of just about everything I made, I used these patterns as starting points as I did not have time to draft anything from scratch due to the limited time and total amount of volume to be constructed. Here is a selection for your consideration of my Victorian Men's costumes from "In the Next Room or The Vibrator Play": |
